The Shard to be officially
inaugurated today
05/07/2012
London’s latest skyscraper is set to be
unveiled today, with the Shard becoming the tallest building
in not only the capital, but the whole of Europe. This
creates another fantastic landmark for anyone staying in any
of the
London hostels during the summer months to enjoy.
Rising 1,016ft into the sky and
featuring 11,000 glass panels and 306 flights of stairs, it
was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, with the
building earning its name after being unofficially referred
to as a ‘shard of glass’ whilst still in the planning
stages. The event will be marked with a fantastic laser show
from its peak to 15 different London skyscrapers and
landmarks, including the likes of Canary Wharf and the
Gherkin.
The evening’s celebrations, which will
be presented by the president of Qatar Hamad Bin Jassim
Jabor Al Thani and the Duke of York, bring to end work on
the outer shell, with the interior expected to be fully
completed in 2013.
